 Getting SCARA Automation Right on a Budget

SCARA robots are popular in small and medium factories because they are fast, accurate, and affordable. But many factory owners make the same mistake. They spend their budget on the robot and then try to save money on the storage system. They buy a cheap, slow magazine that cannot keep up. The robot finishes its work and waits. The money spent on a fast robot is wasted because the storage system becomes the bottleneck.

 

The Economical Four-Axis Robot Multi-Layer Storage System is different. It is affordable, but it does not sacrifice speed. The layer change time is 15 to 20 seconds – fast enough to match most SCARA robots. It uses the same type of servo drive and rack-and-guide system as our high-end models. The only things we removed were the expensive extras: vision systems, predictive logic, and advanced sensors. These are nice to have, but they are not essential for most standard production work.

 

One customer in Shenzhen runs a shop with 20 SCARA robots doing CNC loading and unloading. Before using our system, they had workers pushing carts full of parts from machine to machine. The workers were tired, and machines often sat idle waiting for material. They switched to our Economical Four-Axis Robot Multi-Layer Storage Systems – one per robot. The workers now just check and refill trays. The machines never wait for material. Over time, the investment cost per unit became very low. They recovered their investment in six months.

 

The system uses a Guangdong Gumei PLC and touch screen. Operation is simple. The frame is made of thick steel and reinforced to handle the vibration from fast-moving SCARA robots. The repeat positioning accuracy is within ±0.25 mm. This is precise enough for most small parts like phone frames, plastic components, and hardware pieces. The sensor system can accurately detect the presence and status of parts, which avoids empty grabs and errors.
